Broward Chapter of Broward Chapter of
North American Butterfly Association Newsletter
Dear Members and Friends of the Broward County Butterfly Chapter of N.A.B.A.
This month's meeting is Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at the Broward County Extension Service Building, 3245 College Avenue, Davie, Florida, USA 33314, (954) 370-3725. The Extension Building is on the West side of College Avenue just opposite the sign for the Florida Atlantic University campus North of BCC's main entrance.
Our guest speaker this month is Mr. Todd Henry-DeJesus presenting "Butterflies of South Florida with Fantastic Photos!" as preparation for our 4th of July Counts on June 14th and July 12th. Todd, who works for the City of Coconut Creek as their Planning Projects Coordinator, is a Master Gardener and has designed many butterfly gardens for Broward County Schools. He recently spoke to the new class of National Wildlife Habitat Stewards. His presentation will include some fantastic butterfly photographs and the host and nectar plants they are attracted to.
Join us for a social time between 6:30 pm and 7 pm with coffee and refreshments. You can meet and chat with us while checking out the arriving plants at the raffle table. This is the most opportune time to purchase raffle tickets from Sandy Fernandes at $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. There will be a brief business meeting and our evening's presentation will begin at 7:15.
At last month's meeting, Ms. Sandy Koi, one of our chapter's butterfly experts, presented Migrating Butterflies through Florida. Sandy's presentation was so impressive based upon her very in-depth research. We all learned new details about the flying patterns of butterflies, the reasons for their treks, the times of year and directions they fly. She noted new research findings which indicate there is an increase in longevity of migrating butterflies VS previous estimates of their lifespan.
We have not reached the total of 12 shirts to place the order. If you would like to purchase a chapter polo shirt, please make sure to bring a check. If we don't have the required number, we will have to return the previously placed orders/checks and wait until later on in the year.
Following the presentation, we will have our Plant Raffle. Have any extra plants? Bring them along for the plant raffle. Please label plants with common and botanical names and use as a host or nectar plant. The raffle is the club's source of income and we appreciate all efforts to make it a success.
